By julie

Hi, I’m Julie! This blog was created for school purposes (I’m a student at BCIT studying New Media and Web Technologies – computer nerd stuff). Before this, I’ve had professional chef training at the Art Institute, studied English Literature at Simon Fraser, and currently, I make soap for Lush Handmade Cosmetics in Vancouver.

My Ideal Job

I decided that I wanted to go into web development because I was always curious about how websites were created from the back-end. I have a very distinct design style, and my specialty is animal and nature designs. I love animals! If I could start all over again, I would go into animal care. My dream career would be to combine my love for animals and passion for design into one! I’d love to work with non-profit organizations, such as the SPCA, and promote their cause through various media, such as websites and promotional posters. To work with company with strong values and ethics would be the most fulfilling job for me. My dream workplace would be an informal environment, where pets are allowed, everyday is “Casual Friday,” and business suits are optional 🙂

Technical Skills

Here are some of the applications I’ve been studying so far, and what I think of them:

  • I’m a big fan of Photoshop and Illustrator. Wouldn’t be saying that 6 months ago, but the things I’ve learned in those 6 months have turned me into a believer!
  • I can create websites in HTML using CSS, as well as Dreamweaver, but I prefer plain old HTML.
  • I’m using WordPress to create this blog and learning the ropes here, but in the future, I’d like to use Drupal.
  • I know JavaScript, and can validate online forms no problem.
  • One of my favourite programs is Flash for creating animations.
  • I’m confident with the steps to creating good, user-friendly Information Architecture. It’s all about the users!
  • I thoroughly enjoyed editing video in Final Cut Pro (but not so much shooting the video).
  • I have experience in editing audio in Pro Tools LE, creating soundscapes and remixing music.
  • I know how to author DVDs in DVD Studio Pro to make funky DVD menus.
  • And currently, I’m learning how to add motion to designs, and special effects for videos in After Effects.
